For Teachers

Quick, practical classroom tips for supporting every brain. Small changes help every child shine, and they help the whole class too.

Dyslexia
  1. Give instructions out loud as well as in writing.
  2. Give children time to practise before reading aloud, or invite volunteers.
  3. Mark for ideas and content, not just spelling.
  4. Give key word lists and printed notes instead of copying from the board.
  5. Allow extra time, and use audio or read-aloud tools where you can.
Dyscalculia
  1. Use concrete materials: cubes, counters, number lines and money.
  2. Let children use a number line, hundred square or tables chart. It builds understanding.
  3. Teach one step at a time, with a worked example on the board.
  4. Give fewer questions rather than easier ones, and plenty of time instead of timed tests.
  5. Link maths to real life: shopping, cooking, sport and time.
ADHD
  1. Seat the child near you and away from doors and windows.
  2. Break tasks into small chunks, with a short checklist.
  3. Build in movement: jobs, errands and short brain breaks.
  4. Use a visual timer, so the child can see how long is left.
  5. Praise effort straight away, and redirect quietly and positively.
Dyspraxia (DCD)
  1. Offer alternatives to handwriting, like typing, voice notes or a scribe.
  2. Try pencil grips, sloped writing boards and wider-lined paper.
  3. Give handouts instead of copying from the board.
  4. Use visual checklists to help with organising bags and equipment.
  5. Allow extra time for PE, changing and practical tasks.
DLD
  1. Keep instructions short and give them one at a time.
  2. Check understanding by asking the child to show or tell you in their own words.
  3. Use pictures, gestures and objects alongside words.
  4. Pre-teach new topic words before the lesson.
  5. Give plenty of wait time before expecting an answer.
Autism
  1. Keep a predictable routine and show a visual timetable.
  2. Warn the child about changes as early as you can.
  3. Use clear, literal language: say exactly what you mean.
  4. Offer a quiet space, and keep noise, lighting and displays calm.
  5. Use the child's special interests to build motivation.
