Finn lived in a small white cottage beside a lighthouse. His grandmother was the lighthouse keeper, and every night she climbed the winding stairs to switch on the great lamp.

One evening, a thick grey fog rolled in from the sea. Finn could not even see the end of the garden. Out on the water, a little fishing boat was trying to find its way home.

Then the lights in the cottage flickered and went out. The power is gone! said Granny. Without the lamp, the fisherman will not see the rocks.

Finn thought quickly. He remembered the old bell hanging by the door. Granny, the bell! he shouted. They ran outside and rang it as loudly as they could. Dong! Dong! Dong!

Out in the fog, the fisherman heard the bell. He knew he was close to the rocks, so he turned his boat slowly and followed the sound into the harbour.

Soon the power came back and the great beam of light swept across the sea. The fisherman knocked on the cottage door to say thank you. That night, Finn fell asleep feeling very proud.
